Best picnic spots in Devon

17 Jun 2024

If you’re looking for something to do in the warmer months, you can’t go far wrong with a picnic. As we are blessed to live in one of the most picturesque places, it’s almost a rite of passage to enjoy lunch at one of the best picnic spots in Devon.

Watermouth Bay, North Devon, EX34 9SL

Nestled into the unspoilt North Devon coast, Watermouth Cove is a romantic rocky inlet. Protected from the elements thanks to the shelter of the cliffs, it’s the perfect place for peace and relaxation. Surrounded by other beaches and coves, and near the infamous Watermouth Castle, adventure awaits!

Grand Western Canal, Tiverton, EX16 7AE

Known to locals as ‘Tiverton Canal’, this is  a true hidden gem in the Mid Devon countryside. The Grand Western Canal is a country park and nature reserve, offering stunning views and wildlife. Hire a Canadian Canoe or Row Boat, walk the 11 miles of the canal, or simply sit and watch the world go by.

Spitchwick, Dartmoor, TQ13 7NT

When we think of Dartmoor, we think of wide expanses of land, the tors, and wild ponies and sheep dotted around. Spitchwick offers a completely different experience. Situated in the heart of the moors, Spitchwick is renowned locally for its idyllic green common, wild swimming in the River Dart, and gorgeous views. Don’t forget towels and swimwear when packing your picnic; you will want to spend the whole day here.

Bigbury-on-Sea, Salcombe, TQ7 4AS

Flanked by rolling hills and the infamous Burgh Island, Bigbury-on-Sea beach is one-of-a-kind. Golden sand meets clear turquoise sea, and you can spend hours exploring the rocky coastline. If you time your visit with the tide, you can take the sea tractor across the tidal causeway to Burgh Island, adding a sense of adventure to your picnic.

Berry Head Hill Fort, Brixham, TQ5 9AP

Enjoy the endless views of the English Channel from Berry Head. Start your walk at Berry Head Nature Reserve and enjoy the Napoleonic forts, rare plants and wildlife before settling down with your picnic. If you’re lucky, you may get to witness dolphins and seals in the waters below.

Burrator Reservoir, Dartmoor, PL20 6PE

Undisturbed Burrator is surrounded by mixed woodland. Coupled with the reservoir, it’s the perfect backdrop for a picnic. Explore the surrounding moorland or just sit and watch the world go by in one of the most peaceful settings.

Watersmeet, Exmoor, EX35 6NT

2,000 acres of estate surround Watersmeet, the meeting place of the East Lyn River and Hoar Oak Water. Ancient oak woodlands, connected by miles of footpaths (including the South West Coast Path) provide plenty of adventure, and the Watersmeet Tea-garden is on hand if you need additional refreshments.
