Vehicle tax exemptions in the UK

04 Apr 2025

Navigating the world of vehicle tax can be daunting, but did you know that certain vehicles are exempt from paying tax in the UK?

This exemption can be a significant relief for many vehicle owners. Let's dive into the types of vehicles that qualify for this exemption and the criteria involved.

What kind of vehicles are exempt from vehicle tax?

Vehicles used by disabled persons

One of the primary categories for tax exemption includes vehicles used by disabled persons. If you are a disabled driver or use a vehicle specifically for transporting disabled individuals, you can claim a disability exemption when applying for vehicle tax. It's important to note that this exemption can only be applied to one vehicle at a time.

Historic vehicles

For the vintage car enthusiasts, vehicles made before January 1, 1984, are exempt from vehicle tax. This exemption allows owners of historic vehicles to enjoy their classic cars without the burden of additional tax costs.

Mobility vehicles and powered wheelchairs

Mobility vehicles and powered wheelchairs also qualify for tax exemption. These vehicles must have a maximum speed of 8mph on the road and be fitted with a device that limits them to 4mph on footways.

Agricultural, horticultural, and forestry vehicles

Vehicles used for agriculture, horticulture, and forestry, including tractors, agricultural engines, and light agricultural vehicles used off-road, are exempt from vehicle tax. Additionally, 'limited use' vehicles used for short journeys (no more than 1.5km) on public roads between land used by the same person also qualify.

Other exempt vehicles

Other vehicles that are exempt from vehicle tax include mowing machines designed for cutting grass only, steam-powered vehicles, and vehicles registered as off the road (SORN). If you register a vehicle as off the road, you'll receive a refund for any remaining vehicle tax owed.

How to apply for exemption

Applying for a vehicle tax exemption is straightforward. You can claim disability exemption when you apply for vehicle tax, and for other types of exemptions, you can follow the guidelines provided on the UK government website
