Walks in and around Devon

18 Feb 2025

Devon is a walker’s paradise, from woodlands to beaches to countryside, there’s so many different walks to choose from.

Taking a stroll in the afternoon is a fantastic way to lift your spirits. There's nothing quite like a breath of fresh air to rejuvenate you, and who can resist a beautiful view?

If you’re not sure where to walk next, we’ve found four of some of the loveliest walks around Devon for you to try.

Four picturesque walks in Devon

1. Noss Mayo Walk

The Noss Mayo Walk is a delightful circular route that takes you through the charming village of Noss Mayo, offering stunning coastal views.

The 4-mile Noss Mayo Walk begins at the National Trust car park at Warren, Hannaford Road. From there, follow the track to the coast path and turn right onto Revelstoke Drive. Pass through two gates near Warren Cottage and continue around Gara Point, enjoying the stunning coastal views and wildflowers, before passing through Brakehill Plantation, passing through the village and heading back to the starting point.

This walk offers a delightful mix of coastal scenery, woodlands, and the charming village of Noss Mayo. The path is mostly level, making it accessible for most walkers, and it’s dog-friendly too, but there’s often sheep on the first section of the walk so it would be sensible to keep dogs on the lead to begin with.

2. Coleton Fishacre Walk

The Coleton Fishacre Walk is a two mile circular route that is moderately challenging with some steep and narrow paths, offering breathtaking views over the River Dart.

Along the way, you'll visit the Art Deco holiday home of the D'Oyly Carte family at Coleton Fishacre which is now managed by the National Trust. The walk combines rich history, stunning coastal scenery, and lush woodlands. The house is surrounded by beautifully landscaped gardens.

Along the route, you'll also encounter several points of historical interest, such as old farmsteads and remnants of ancient settlements. The combination of rich history, stunning coastal scenery, and diverse flora and fauna makes this walk a truly memorable experience.

3. Fingle Bridge and Castle Drogo

Fingle Bridge and Castle Drogo are a great walking spot nestled in the Teign Gorge, offering a perfect destination for those seeking a more strenuous hike. The area is steeped in history, with the 17th-century stone arch bridge and nearby, you'll find the ancient hillforts of Prestonbury and Cranbrook Castles.

The walk around Fingle Bridge has a nice mix of riverside paths and woodland trails, but as you follow the meandering river, you'll be surrounded by dense forests. There are also several lookout points with panoramic views of the gorge and the surrounding countryside, which are perfect for a rest and a picnic.

Or if you don’t fancy a picnic, stop for some grub at the Fingle Bridge Inn. Whether you're an avid hiker or simply looking for a tranquil retreat, Fingle Bridge has something for everyone.

4. Wistman’s Wood

Wistman’s Wood is one of Britain’s last remaining ancient temperate rainforests, located in the heart of Dartmoor, Devon. It takes up over 90 acres and has been connected to lots of myths and legends, including hell hounds and pixies.

There’s a few different paths you can choose from. A 4km, circular walk starts from the car park and takes you through a mystical and mysterious landscape of twisted oak trees, moss-covered boulders, and rich biodiversity. But there’s also a quicker route along a gravel path if you just want to take in the surroundings quickly.

Most of the trail isn’t signposted so it’s worth downloading a map or taking screenshots to make sure you don’t get lost.
